What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job” in laymen’s terms, is the surgical reshaping of the nose for either cosmetic or functional reasons. The nose is a complex, three dimensional structure that can profoundly affect the overall look of one’s face. The shape is determined by multiple factors and structures, including bone, cartilage, skin, and mucosa (the lining of nostrils and inside of the nose). Bothersome abnormalities in shape can be present naturally, occur after injuries to the nose, or arise with facial aging.
What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can fix many cosmetic and functional problems with the nose. Wide shape, crooked alignment, a “dorsal hump”, a broad/bulbous tip, an under- or over-projected tip, wide nostril flare, or plunging/hanging tip are common cosmetic concerns that patients seek help with. Restricted breathing or nasal airflow, a deviated nasal septum, or sinus problems are functional concerns that can be addressed with rhinoplasty, but may require additional work inside the nose. Some functional problems may call for further help by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) or sinus surgeon.

Who Is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Adults 18 years and older who are non-smokers and in good health are generally good candidates for rhinoplasty. Patients should have a clear sense of what specifically bothers them about their nose’s appearance, as well as realistic expectations about what can be achieved through surgery.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Dr. Day performs open rhinoplasty, in which incisions are made just inside the nose and across the columella, which separates the nostrils at the base of the nose. Through these incisions, the bones, cartilage, nasal lining, and skin can be manipulated depending on patient goals. Some reshaping of the nose may require cartilage grafts taken from elsewhere in the body, but these typically come from the nasal septum. Less frequently, they are taken from the ear or rib cartilages through inconspicuous incisions.
What Can I Expect in My Rhinoplasty Recovery?
Depending on the extent of the surgery, you can expect varying degrees of post-operative pain, swelling, and bruising that can persist for three to four weeks after surgery. At first, it may feel more difficult to breathe through the nose while splints are on and swelling subsides. You should plan to keep your head elevated as much as possible to help with gravity drainage and you should resist blowing your nose until cleared by Dr. Day. Gentle applications of ice packs and prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications can help reduce or alleviate discomfort.
How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
Rhinoplasty costs can vary widely depending on the extent of work done. In general, cases that require cartilage grafting or repositioning of bone are more expensive, both due to surgical complexity and amount of operating room time required to complete the surgery. Costs can typically range anywhere from $7,500 to $15,000. After you have been evaluated by Dr. Day, his staff will provide you with an itemized cost estimate for surgery that includes facility and anesthesia costs.
